Why Early Detection Matters:
Early detection is the cornerstone of breast cancer survival. The sooner it’s detected, the greater the chances of successful treatment. That’s why this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are focusing on the life-saving potential of early detection. Being aware of your body and its changes is the first step toward a healthier, happier future.
Guide to Understanding Breast Cancer
- Look for Signs and Symptoms: Learning how to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and understanding them could be life-saving. Breast cancer signs may include a change in the appearance of the breast and nipple including unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast, dimpling, swelling, shrinkage, and change of skin color. One must not ignore the change of feeling in the breast and nipple. Look out for unusual lumps, nipple tenderness, a change in the skin texture, and nipple discharge.
- The Importance of Regular Screenings: Regular screenings are important because they can detect breast cancer early, often before any symptoms arise. While screenings don’t prevent cancer, they help us to catch it at its most treatable stage. According to the American Cancer Society, when detected early, breast cancer has a 5-year relative survival rate of 99%.
- Self-Examine Once a Month Empower yourself with the knowledge of self-examination. Monitor your breast health at home by performing self-checks once a month. You can perform a self-check in the shower, in front of the mirror, or while lying down. Examine the entire breast and underarm area in a circular motion, top and down. A breast self-exam for women who are still menstruating should be performed around 7-10 days after her period ends, while for those who are post-menopausal a breast self-exam should be performed on the same day of each month.
- Find Your Support System Navigating the complexities of breast cancer can be overwhelming, but you are never alone. Whether it’s friends, family, or support groups, having a network of understanding individuals can make a world of difference. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. offers a Patient Navigation Program and support during treatment and beyond.
